Haha thanks, I just saw it around and was wondering about it :) And go on then, tell me about "It’s not a Side Effect of the Cocaine"- if you have time and willingness and everything ofc. (btw *you're, I realised my horrifying mistake far too late)

Hehe, it’s okay. It happens to everyone! I once messaged Joe on his tumblr asking if there was “any change” (instead of “chance”!) his band would come to Texas (this was during the hiatus). I’m still mortified about it!

Basically, “It’s Not A Side Effect of the Cocaine, I Am Thinking it must be Love” was released in 2004, just three years after the band’s formation.

"Why can you read me like no one else?
I hide behind these words
But I’m coming out
I wish I kept them behind my tongue
I hide behind these words
But I’m coming out”

Pete has said numerous times that Patrick /gets him/ in a way no one else does, so from the get go we know this is about Patrick. Pete ‘hides behind his words’ and lets Patrick sing them. And the phrase ‘coming out’ in a song about Patrick? Couldn’t be any more obvious.

"Put your hand between
An aching head and an aching world
We’ll make them so jealous
We’ll make them hate us
An aching head and an aching world
We’ll make them so jealous
We’ll make them so jealous”

Pete also never shuts up about Patrick’s musical genius, his voice, his skills, it’s clear he knew he and Patrick, along with Joe and Andy, were going to make it big.

"All the ways you make my stomach turn
And all the long drives
With my friends blur
And I wish I kept them inside my mind
I hide behind these words”

You know that feeling you get in your stomach when you see your crush smile, like giddy butterflies? Yeah.

"And think of all the places
Where you’ve been lost
And then found…out
In between my sheets
In between the rights and the wrongs”

I can’t help but picture someone finding Pete and Patrick in the same bed (“in between my sheets”), maybe just sleeping curled up next to each other, and being “found out”. “In between the rights and the wrongs” and Pete wondering if this is right, if he’s doing the right thing, if he’s going to mess up his band if he and Patrick don’t work out.

Well, clearly not.

If ANY song is about Peterick, it’s definitely this one!

Considering your url, I'd imagine that your an authority on Peterick matters, so I was wondering if you could explain to me why people think GINASFS is about Patrick? Thanks :)

Personally, I think it’s about Patrick and Mikey Way (Summer of Like, Warped Tour ‘05). This was the first album to come out after the Summer of Like, and there’s a reason Infinity on High has been nicknamed “The Mikey Way Album”.  There are tons of fan theories out there that can explain it better than I can, but I’ll break down the lyrics and try to pull some meaning from them.

"I’ve loved everything about you that hurts,
So let me see your moves,
Let me see your moves,
Lips pressed close to mine
True Blue, but the prince of any failing empire knows that
Everybody wants
Everybody wants to drive on through the night,
If it’s the drive back home”

Okay, first verse. Right off the bat, we can infer that this is a song about unrequited love- nothing hurts more than loving someone who doesn’t love you back. “lips pressed close to mine” Notice it says close to mine, but not ‘on mine’. Pete often kissed Patrick’s cheek on stage, but never his lips. “The prince of any failing empire…” We know early 2005 was a bad year for Pete, and this song was released in 2007. He might have written this song sometime in 2004, leading up to his suicide attempt in February of 2005. This might be a reference to how he felt like a failure. “Everybody wants to drive on through the night if it’s a drive back home” probably are reference to driving back to Chicago after a long tour.

"Things aren’t the same anymore,
Some nights it gets so bad that I almost pick up the phone
Trade Baby Blues, for Wide-Eyed Browns
I sleep with your old shirts
And walk through this house in your shoes
I know it’s strange
It’s a strange way of saying that I know I’m supposed to love you
I’m supposed to love you”

So, something has changed between the author and the person they’re in love with. Maybe the author confessed their love, and the recipient rejected them outright. Thus, why the author can’t call them anymore. “Trade baby blues for wide-eyed browns” is where it really starts to kick in- imagine you’re Pete in the summer of 2005: you recently attempted suicide, you’re in love with your blue-eyed singer who doesn’t love you back (“I sleep with your old shirts and walk through this house in your shoes, I know it’s strange”), and you meet a guy with brown eyes who shows interest in you- enter Mikey Way. “It’s a strange way of saying that I know I’m supposed to love you” Pete knows he’s supposed to love Patrick, but he finds himself falling for Mikey instead. After all, unlike Patrick, Mikey is actually showing an interest in him.

"I’ve already given up on myself twice
(But the) third time is the charm,
Third time is the charm
Threw caution to the wind,
But I’ve got a lousy arm,
And I’ve traced your shadows on the wall
Now I kiss them whenever I’m down,
Whenever I’m down
Figured I’m not figuring myself out”

Pete saying he’s “given up on himself” is probably a reference to his suicide attempt. “Threw caution to the wind, but I’ve got a lousy arm” Pete threw caution into the wind perusing Mikey, knowing it probably wouldn’t last more than a summer, but he did anyway. “And I’ve traced your shadows on the wall now I kiss them whenever I’m down” Pete found comfort in Mikey after his heartbreak with Patrick. “Figured I’m not figuring myself out” Pete doesn’t know how to explain his feelings, but it seems he doesn’t really want to.

"I was born under a bad sign,
But you saved my life
That night on the roof of your hotel
“Cross my heart and hope to die,
Splinter from the headboard in my eye”
Photo-proofed kisses I remember so well”

In Pete’s book “Gray”, his character “Martin” saves his character “Pete” from killing himself. Obviously, his book didn’t come out until after this song was written, but how implausible does it sound that, during a hotel night, Pete snuck up to the roof and considered jumping off, especially in the months leading up to his suicide attempt in 2005? How implausible does it sound that Patrick was the one who noticed he was missing, and talked Pete down? Pete has said in a quote that Patrick “saves his life every day” (or something to that effect). “Photo proofed kisses I remember so well” Again, there’s plenty of pictures of Pete kissing Patrick on the cheek on stage, but it definitely doesn’t happen anymore.

I run this peterick blog, but even I can’t deny that sometime most likely happened between Pete and Mikey during Warped Tour ‘05. The most damning evidence has always been the line “Trade baby blues for wide-eyed browns” because Patrick’s eyes look blue and Mikey’s eyes are brown. It’s a bit of a stretch to link this song to Peterick- honestly, “It’s not a Side Effect of the Cocaine” is MUCH easier to link to Peterick. I think most Peterick fans have linked this song to their ship because of the line about eye colors, and how it’s about unrequited love. Pete loving Patrick and Patrick not loving him back because he’s straight is a really strong motif in the fandom.

At the end of the day, the most likely scenario is that we’re all just reading too deep into it and this is a song about some girl that Pete liked but he got dumped or something. However, the great thing about music is that it’s open to interpretation- if you think this song is about Petereick, then why can’t it be? It’s all up to you.

If anyone has any headcanons or theories of their own, feel free to send them in! I’m sure some of you can explain it much better than I can!
